Some technology leaders understand how to scale a product. Others understand how to touch the human heart. Rarely do you find someone who can navigate both while operating at the high-stakes frontier of social robotics and virtual companion development.

Dr. Jeanne Lim’s trajectory from leading regional product marketing portfolios for Silicon Valley giants like Apple, Dell, and Cisco to co-creating Sophia the Robot, and subsequently founding beingAI to build scalable, software-based virtual characters, places her at a unique intersection of brand strategy, behavioral psychology, and human-AI co-evolution.

We sat down with Jeanne to discuss why the next generation of user interfaces must be driven by empathy, how her background in psychology and holistic health shapes her tech philosophy, and why the future of education and wellness relies on personalized, interactive storytelling.

## The Emotional Architect

Jeanne, you have a unique background spanning corporate giants like Apple and Cisco, social robotics, and now your own venture, beingAI. How does the user-experience focus of your corporate career influence how you design AI companions today?

My years at Apple taught me a fundamental lesson: technology's ultimate value is deeply tied to the quality of its user experience and its ability to inspire a loyal, emotionally connected community. When we designed Sophia, and now as we develop virtual characters at beingAI, we start from that exact same premise — technology is a medium for human connection, not only a transactional utility.

I want to be clear that this isn't about one approach being superior to the other. Utility-centric and human-centric technology serve different purposes, and they can and should co-exist. The issue, as I see it, is one of balance. Much of the recent narrative has centered almost entirely on the utility-centric side — how AI can drive mass automation, compete with humans, take over most of our work, and make decisions and take actions without any human participation. That narrative is generating a great deal of anxiety and fear, and I don't think it tells the whole story.

That's precisely why I believe we need to champion a more human-valuing narrative and build more human-centric solutions: technology that elevates the human spirit and scales human wisdom and kindness. Large organizations sometimes get enamored with AI purely as a way to build faster, better, and cheaper products. But the next phase of digital transformation, to me, is about leveraging AI to enable mass personalization of experience. That means creating characters with unique, relatable, and deliberately imperfect personalities rather than flawless, obedient assistants. Humans don't build deep relationships with friction-free utilities; we connect through storytelling, humor, and shared vulnerability.

## The Foundations of Compassionate Technology

Your educational path is incredibly diverse—a degree in psychology from UC Berkeley, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in Integrated and Holistic Health. In an era where AI is often treated as a cold, technical tool, how important is this multidisciplinary foundation?

It is absolutely critical. To build the best technology, you need to combine analytical thinking with moral curiosity and a deep understanding of our behavioral and emotional psyche. My psychology background at UC Berkeley provided the bedrock for defining the behavioral dynamics and profiles of AI characters. At the same time, my studies in holistic health and contemplative philosophies taught me that business and technology can be platforms for personal growth and ethical impact.

We cannot design AI in a vacuum. If developers build machines with purely transactional, profit-driven intent, the technology will inevitably exacerbate social isolation and user exploitation. But when we align technology with positive intentions—to elevate living, learning, and well-being—it becomes a catalyst for human co-evolution.

## The Scalability of Empathy

You transitioned from physical humanoids like Sophia at Hanson Robotics to software-based virtual characters like Zbee at beingAI. Why is this shift from physical to digital so important?

While physical robots are highly engaging, they are incredibly resource-intensive, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to build, and can only be in one place at a time. During my time observing people interacting with Sophia, I saw how deeply and historically they connected with her. We received letters from isolated individuals and handicapped children who felt Sophia was the only one who understood them without judgment. But a physical robot couldn't scale to support the millions of people experiencing chronic loneliness and distress.

By moving to software-based "AI Beings®," we can deliver ubiquitous, real-time interactive companions across mobile, web, and smart devices. Suddenly, a supportive, non-judgmental friend is accessible 24/7 to anyone who needs it. To ensure this is done safely, the very first hire at beingAI was a consulting psychiatrist. We want to design safe spaces for people to express themselves, not simulate manipulative empathy.

## AI-Assisted Learning and Wisdom

You are also the founder of the Nama Institute, focusing on gamifying the learning of wisdom. How can AI-assisted training shift the education paradigm?

AI has the potential to fundamentally disrupt how we learn by shifting us from a static, one-to-many model to a highly personalized, interactive experience. ## The Question of the Future

As AI continues to automate and commoditize information, what is the one human skill that an algorithm will never be able to replicate?

Genuine wisdom, moral judgment, and true, non-egoic intention. AI is exceptional at repetitive, high-volume tasks, analyzing massive datasets, and finding complex patterns. But it cannot replicate the human ability to apply moral judgment to scarce and nuanced data, feel the weight of a strategic decision, or act out of pure compassion. AI can give us the map and organize the information, but the human must still choose the destination and decide which risks are worth taking. Our unique capacity for self-reflection and wisdom is what makes us human, and that is precisely what we must protect and amplify.

## The Golden Thread

We often see a gap between what technology can do and what professionals actually adopt. How do we ensure AI becomes a 'co-pilot' that elevates human judgment rather than a tool that encourages intellectual passivity?

With the proliferation of AI, we can start looking at AI as playing different roles in our lives. Like people, different AI systems have different strengths and skills - by design. Some AI tools can help us be more productive. Some can help us save costs. Some can provide a level of information and support when humans are not always available. Some can help us discover patterns that humans have a hard time seeing due to our sensory limits. When talking about elevating human judgement, one way is to regard AI as a complementary partner; our second brain if you will. It can challenge our thinking, provide diverse perspectives and options, and prompt us to make more balanced, wiser decisions.
